First place had a wonderfully-textured face and moody lighting that drew us in, wanting to know more about the woman. Composition and an interesting background, coupled with good subject placement and lighting, elevated the second-place photograph. Those lips make the third-place picture, we just wished there was a little more to be seen of the face and the exposure more even.
