For some reason, the single photo entries in this category stood out to us more than the multiple-image entries. There were some outstanding individual images in the multiple-image entries, but because the entries are considered as a whole, other, less interesting entries negated their effect. Our advice: run your entries past your photo editors or fellow photographers for their input if you don't already do that! The 1st place photo of the child with his mom as she is getting her teeth cleaned at a health fair jumped out at us immediately. Talk about something you've never seen before! Great shot. The 2nd place photo, of family members in court as the killer of a loved one is sentenced is full of emotion and a beautifully composed image, with the eye being drawn left-to-right, with every point along the way evoking emotion. The slight obstruction in the lower right hand corner was noticed, but the picture is so powerful, in our view the image survives it due to its emotional impact. The 3rdplace image is a fantastic look at something we suspect we know about but don't often get to see - the impact being in jail can have on family members. The emotion is immediate. One minor quibble with this image is that it could have benefited from a tighter crop, it is a little too loose on the left and the writing on the board at the top of the photo is a real distraction.
