Spot news is all about being in the right place at the right time, and all of these photographers did that. First place was such a quirky moment. We were curious to know if the photographer got closer (and wet) and shot something with a wider lens. Second place really tells the story of the stress and conditions these firefighters undergo. We also found it interesting it was an inmate firefighter. We had to read the caption for third place, but after doing so we felt its story pushed it into the ranking.
