Mid-Atlantic – July 2017 – Portrait/Illustration

Judges Comments

Smallest category with weak entries. Would like to see more thought put into portraits – it seems many of the entries were snapshot like and didn’t really have the composed feel of a portrait. 1st: This photo immediately stood out and took first place the second we saw it. Most planned portrait that did a nice job of using light, color and composition to its advantage with a background that has significance to the story. 2nd: Nice portrait with good context about the subject. Light is soft and colors are neutral. Would like to see a different crop, as the negative space on the left of the frame doesn’t add to the portrait.3rd: The photographer recognized a good character for a portrait during a busy event and was able to isolate the her from the busyness of the event for this portrait.
