Once you got past the requisite array of really nice photos of athletes in celebration or dejection, photos like the first and third place winners really jumped out from the pack because these photographers were seeing different aspects of the sports. Of note, the second place winner was up against a different entry that was shot by someone standing right next to the photographer. Both are compelling, but the winner stood out because of the positioning of the out of focus foreground -- which leads your eye back to the players on the bench in the winner and away from the bench in the one that didn't quite make the cut.
