The Spot News category was very weak. We don't believe that this fact is the fault of the submitters. For the last few decades newspapers have trended away from the scanner shooters. They used to be a main stay in the dailies. Don't be afraid to treat a spot news event like a feature assignment and look for detail and how the mishap or occurrence is affecting the subjects or bystanders involved in it. 1st place was awarded for it's emotional quality of two subjects embracing at the scene of a fire. It moved us.
