Judges felt this category was weak, there were several photograph that could have been in the running with simple adjustments had been made to the composition while shooting. The winning photograph is simple yet telling of the story of struggling veterans with families. The second place photograph could have easily been a simple portrait, instead the photographer captured a raw moment showing that some wounds might never heal. The third place photograph was a close call, but was chosen as the composition is neat and the photograph speaks deeper about the country and the significance of current events affecting the future of the country.
