The first place image was clean and composed well. We feel that spot news images that are clean and compositionally interesting rise above the rest because it shows that the photographer slowed down during what are typically fast-paced and chaotic events to get a dynamic image. The second place image showed that the photographer was in the right place at the right time. However, the image is overexposed and it looks like the resolution is low. We were wondering if this image was taken while the photographer was also shooting video. These two elements weakened the overall impact of the image to us. The third place image showed a good sense of place and scale. It looks like the image has a soft focus. We wish it was sharper.
