Northwest Region – July 2016 – Sports Action

Judges Comments

The best photos quickly rose to the top in this category. A main problem for a lot of these entries was the inclusion of too many photos for an entry. In most cases, a photo may have placed if it hadn't been accompanied by one or two weaker images. If you submit a gallery, it has to be judged as a whole. Galleries in this category do not have to tell a cohesive story, just be a collection of good action shots. That being said, our first place entry is a gallery of images. We were arguing over the ranking of these photos because we each liked the composition and action in each shot. Once we realized that they all were entered together, they were hands down the winner. We liked second place the more we looked at it. At first glance, it seems like a pretty standard shot. However, the composition leads your eye around the image, the expression is excellent, and the inclusion of the number of the back of the jersey was a good thought. Great job taking advantage (and of seeing) a pitcher that has an animated grimace while pitching. Third place had all the elements there for an interesting shot of an attempted, but failed, goal block. The caption did a good job explaining the situation. A fresh look at a soccer game.
