The Train Fatal and the helicopter fighting the wildfire both were closely tied for first but in the end the Train Fatal photo took first place. The image shows a raw human reaction to tragedy. The Second place photo was awarded to The Hidden Pines, the image shows the widespread destruction of the wildfire as compared to the efforts to contain it. The photographer succeeded in using the composition of the photo to show the scale of an issue. In third place was the Flooding images. The hydroplaning frame captures cause and result of a car crash and is a little different than many car crash spot news photos. The image of the child watching the scene of a shooting came in as an alternate.
