Judges Comments

Another good category with good moments but the top three were obvious. First place was a great moment, not a weak expression in the photo. Every element of this well balanced photo contributed to it's success in telling the story in a fun, interesting and engaging way. Nice capture! Second place had all the context needed to tell the story. We guessed the photographer saw the family dynamics early and waited with them to make the right moment. Good journalistic instincts made this photo. Third place made the cut because the photographer used the ceiling light to create a halo effect on the subject that separated him from the darkness. We've all made pictures of flying sparks, but this one uses the correct shutter speed, angle and backlight to make it really good.
