This category was difficult because most of the entries were not
stories or essays, those few that were or came close were not well
executed. We were struck that many of them included a single portrait
that would have easily placed in that category but were totally
dismissed in this one. First place was far and above all the others as
an example of visual storytelling. The images complimented the
storyline, most were strong moments even were they not great
visuals. The story is told over time and in a variety of places. We'd
like even more about these people. Second and third were both onetime
shoots, single events that might have fit better as general news
multiples (as the winner of GENW would have faired well in this
category in light of this situation) but both were well executed with
good variety of images that were storytelling and visually compelling.
We liked the daddy dance just a little better for having a wider variety
of images and emotions.
