There was a remarkable number of very routine images, lacking in
emotion, drama or even compelling story. We were also struck by the
number of images taken through windows without any clear purpose.
First place was a nicely shot series from a police funeral with several
unique compositions and good diversity of coverage. The lede image
in the package was strong enough to win on its own and the
remaining images did not detract. Second, a single frame, was nicely
composed, perfectly exposed and a very good moment from a often
boring sort of general news assignment. Third was under-edited by
half ... we could easily have placed a much tighter edit higher but
despite the detracting images we felt the strong images worthy of
recognition (even if the subject matter did turn the stomach of at least
one judge).
