There were three entries in spot news, and none really stood out and they all had their flaws. We awarded the UCC shooting first for it's news value. Like many entries across all categories it could have used a tighter edit, and several photos could have been cropped more effectively. Second place was good "flame porn" but the firefighter was completely lost in the silhouette. A better vantage point and this would have been a first place image easily. The bus crash needed a stronger crop and/or framing. There's a lot to be played with in those lines in the snow. Use them.
