1st Place
Invisible No More - Kurt AustinKGW-TV

Jon Menell - Strong sequencing and pace throughout. Intro nicely builds. B-roll that speaks was a great reveal. Moments and frames perfectly chosen overall. 1st and 2nd in this category were a very tough call. Ultimately the moment to moment “get” of every shot and editing choice in the 1st place entry edged it out over the more fixed and cooperative nature of many of the important elements of the 2nd place entry. Both top notch.

Beccan Habegger - For a story about a population whose members are often socially stripped of dignity, this story pays dignity and respect in spades, allowing personalities and soundbites to play out and breathe. Edits effectively convey the hardships of living on the street - and how much this kind gesture in the form of a photoshoot meant to each one of them. We saw smiles and flickers of pain - even if for a moment. Opening sequence sets strong tone for the story and transitions flow smoothly-- indoor to a meal, in the studio to the photoshoot, etc. Never jarring. Fantastic choice to end back on the guitar player, at the end of his song - “thank you.”
2nd Place

Jon Menell - Fantastic pace, pause and motivated technique. Very emotional and potently illustrated. Top elements, writing, overall structure, shots, and sound well harmonized. As said this was a close call for 1st place. Only complaint was“Post script” moment around reporter ID felt unnecessary.

The editing here is magnificent. The opening sequence is so intriguing and so well-paced. The slight delay or speed up between occasional “ticks” is a subtle and masterful move to vary the pacing and throw in some dissonance. Using the fire for transitions and natural sound pops kept “flame” as the theme, weaving everything together. We felt the story could’ve ended sooner-- cutting out the last couple of soundbites would’ve landed the piece more decisively.

Becca Habegger - Smooth blending of audio in the beginning, nice parallel parking of tracking between her musical phrases. Interesting, engaging piece! Story well-revealed through edits. Good weaving of natural sound throughout.
