First Place: We both immediately agreed that “Fatal Fire Vigil” stood out as the first-place winner. It's a tricky lighting situation at that time of night, but the photographer captured the moment beautifully. Second Place: The photographer found the perfect spot to document an emotional moment in “Transfer.” The image shows all the factors of the procession in one shot — the view of the motorcycle escorting the hearse and the line of fire officers saluting. Very powerful photo. Third Place: It can be difficult to find emotion during a political event, but the photographer captured this nice emotional moment in “Primary.” Alternate: We like the composition of “Iran,” and we think the angle it was shot from helps the photo feel that much more powerful.
