1. The Lunar New Year caught our attention because of its coverage of many aspects of the event without being repetitive. It also benefited from its visual variety and good moments. Most of all the judges appreciated the edit, which was the tightest of those submitted. 2. The judges thought this detail shot rose above other submissions because of its conveyed weight and emotion through such a tight composition, which they thought they rarely see. 3. Great shot of a lively moment at a school board meeting that showed the photographers ability to react to the situation. The judges would caution the photographer that the protester does fall slightly out of focus, not so much that it ruined the moment for us, but something to be careful of in a spontaneous situation.
HM: The photographer took just enough of a step back in the situation and instead of giving us a plain debate shot delivered something more pictorial and unique.
