The Portraits category featured a number of well-lit and well-executive images, but we ultimately went with captures that engaged the viewer and helped reveal the essence of the subject.
The first place award of the veteran's advocate does both well. Perfect light and the juxtaposition of the mural makes for an effective, telling portrait.
The second award is an engaging, spontaneous capture that draws the viewer in with effective use of shallow depth of field.
We liked the tenderness and authenticity of our third award, especially after reading the backstory.
