First place rose to the top by capturing the human element to these often tragic events. It can be difficult to get access and to have subjects who have lost something to be welcoming of media so it was a nice job by the photog going above and beyond your typical breaking news assignment. Second place was a collection of nice images from a house fire. Third place was a nice image with aesthetic lines and good light.
