Central – February 2025 – Portrait

Judges Comments

1- Very nicely toned, good use of that strip of light. Simple and clean composition, with the subtle storytelling element of Dr. Jonathan’s lab coat. The caption here is also very effective and storytelling, a really great pairing that supplements this portrait well. 2-Fun subject and effective use of a strobe to isolate Brandon from his surroundings and keep the focus on him. I’d say the 24 is causing a bit of distortion here, but it isn’t too jarring in this context. Still, I might recommend something like a 35 mm, and a couple steps back. Toning overall is nice, good use of color. 3-Simple, nicely lit. The lens for this is a bit too wide, it’s distortion is making Ezi’s hands feel so much bigger than his head, which is a bit distracting. In terms of storytelling, this is a bit flat, because we don’t have much of a personal touch in his office - this might have been a situation where suggesting a better place to make the portrait would have served the photographer well.
