Midwest – February 2025 – Photo Story/Essay

Judges Comments

first place: This was a clear winner for us. We were extremely impressed with the visual variety, color, toning, sharpness and storytelling ability with this set. Images are standouts on their own, but combined, they created an incredible visual story about a farm. The photographer used varied techniques, like silhouette, reflection, repetition of theme and high horizon to show us a sense of place. Great work. This was a wonderful submission and story. Second place: This photographer knows what they are doing! We loved the visual variety in this story, but we also truly loved the closeness the photographer got to the subject. They are seen in quiet moments, as well as when they are on the court. Emotion is evident in many of these images. Some images have great framing. Keep it up. Would love to see some more visual variety. Maybe a detail or a stronger establishing image. Third place: Great coverage of the Valentine's Day game. We really liked the photographer's ability to come early and stay late. They were in the locker rooms, looking for fan reactions, finding nice details for establishing, and showing great variety with camera to subject distances. Category notes: When crafting a photo essay, visual variety is paramount. Make sure you’re pulling together wide shots, details and overall different moments. Also be careful of overprocessing your images. This really pulled some of the judges out from one submission.
