Judges Comments
Judges General Comments: So many captions don’t have names or context. This is basic reporting requirements. Poverty vouyerism is not acceptable in today’s newspaper reporting. Just photographing someone sitting on the road or street or being homeless is never news. There are some entries that lacked human contact or even getting in front of the action instead of photographing people’s backs. Watch your corners and your backgrounds. Some images had people’s feet cut off just a bit. Kudos to the Argentinian photographer who entered as many categories as possible and really tried to put their best foot forward and be competitive. 1st: So odd and telling. The smoke coming out of the door and the composition is great. It shows the danger of the firefighter job because the window upstairs is about to explode. It’s a great photo and really unique house first photo. We’ve never seen a house fire that looks like that before. 2nd: The crop is perfect and it’s wide enough to give context but also great framing of the woman. Nice moment and good to wait for something other than happen. 3rd: It’s clean, tells a story. They used the high angle of view well. Good storytelling image.
