Only a few entries and they all left a lot to be desired. Both other entries were ok but couldn't place with bad crops. Superintendent had good light but an unreasonable amount of dead space, put that same advance thought you used for lighting into cropping. Park ranger had his hat cropped and boots in foreground for no reason. Again these are portraits, these awkward little things that make or break a photo can be avoided in a way they can't in general news or sports.
First place shows a good personality and sense of character which is always the goal of portraits.
