The category as a whole was pretty strong.
First place - really moving photo but didn't know what was going on until we read the caption. They’re kind of hiding yet listening in on the next room. The composition of the shot is nicely done with the separation of people from foreground to background. Did a conversion to b&w and made this image even stronger we felt. Looked like a Mary Ellen Mark photo.
Second place - like the spontaneity of it with the dog photobombing the photo and her reaction and his excitement. It's a very natural moment.
Third place - I like the colors more than the subject matter but the composition is done well with the cross and the house beams. The image is geometrically aligned.
