First place – It appears newspapers are covering less and less spot news these days. That's not a knock... just an observation. This image stood out because of the devastation created by the explosion. The firefighter pops in the clutter. Second place – This image is storytelling without having to read the caption. Well-composed scene and a decent moment. Third place – Nice overall scene of this oil spill which shows the scope of the recovery. Looks a little overexposed on our monitor, but it's probably better on the photographer's.
