First place captured all elements in a sadly, routine spot news assignment. The layers from foreground to background elements caught in one frame made it an easy winner. Second place image had nice eye contact from one subject to another giving an emotional connection to the situation. Third place could have been much more dramatic if the image would have been properly cropped tighter, bring the emotion of the moment that much more evident.
