Midwest – December 2020 – Spot News

Judges Comments

With only nine entries it did not take long to choose our winners. Spot new must be visually compelling, it must be storytelling, and it must be, timely. Our winners all hit these points. First place stood out for being on the spot, real f/8 and be there, bit time news photography. The composition works, the moment is right. We liked how the various elements came together, with the flames, the debris and the responders all layered through a well-framed composition. Second place might have been a first in any other month that did not include a terrorist attack. The photographer did an excellent job of bringing us right INTO THE ACTION! The light is great, the sense of movement and action. We like the fact that it’s away from the fire, and yet tells the story of the response and the efforts of the responders. Third place was nicely composed, well exposed, and showed the patience it might take for all the elements to come together to make that image work.
