Yet more hard choices here... The first place Haitian protests used powerful images tightly and cohesively edited to form a powerful presentation – as did the Chilean protests (second place), also boasting powerful photos that left the judges in awe of both photographers' abilities to bring back images from dangerous situations of unrest and chaos. The third place image of people responding to the stricken homeless person suffering was stirring in the way it can inspire empathy and concern among viewers. The other exceptional images we’d like to mention include the officer standing in the intersection as residents evacuate in Sylmar, California as the approaching fire looms – as well as the great series of police response to the shooter situation in Vancouver, Wash.
