First place was our favorite. It was a picture of a black-eyed young competitor at the start of a bike race. We discussed how the image could have easily been taken by a commercial photographer with hours of planning and a big national budget. We liked the fact that it was shot by a news photojournalist at maybe 500th of a second with their car double-parked at the curb. Second place was an early bus drop off for a marathon where the shooter displayed their understanding of exposing for the best picture when you're juggling a half-dozen variations of light and color temperatures. Third place was a youngster hanging on at the start of a rodeo event.
