First place goes to the strong, graphic image that juxtaposed a bit of humanity against the enormity of the burning
landfill. Our second place selection is a different spot news photo, which we appreciated for the levity in an otherwise
serious moment (and we’re glad the cat was OK too). The photographer of the third place selection deserves props for
putting a fire into context but choosing a single picture from the four submitted, such as the horse image, might have
elevated the entry. The alternate picture was a good daily image of a big news scene – derailments aren’t the easiest
to shoot but the aerial angle and the roadway at left give us a sense of scale.
