The first place tugged image has a super clean background, faces and ball in frame, and freezes a peak moment. Many other entries lacked one or more of these things. The USA header also contains these elements, but was a bit more busy with subjects less isolated. For the third place crushing ride picture, we like the graphic nature and use of negative space to show the scale of the wave.
