Quarterly Multimedia Contest

Entries for the 4th quarter of the Quarterly Multimedia Contest are now open through January 15th.

RULES

All entrants must be active NPPA members. To confirm this, you must log in to enter. All entries must be published online in the yearly quarter of the contest. Multimedia Project entries that cover an ongoing story may span more than one month, but they may only be entered once.

Entry URLs must be publicly accessible throughout the judging period.

It is understood that any copyright of an entry remains the property of the photographer or employer of the photographer.

However, all participants agree that by entering the contest, entrants give permission to NPPA for its regional and national publications to reproduce winning entries, either through hard copy or electronically, including and not limited to, regional publications, News Photographer magazine, commercial online services and NPPA presences on the Internet. Reasonable precautions will be taken to ensure the security of electronic reproduction.

Works can include:
Audio, Photography, Video and Motion Graphics

ENTRIES

6 submissions per quarter permissible.
First Place= 50 points, Second Place= 40 points, Third Place =30 points
With each (cumulative) entry, entrants receive additional 5 points for entering.
A Multimedia Journalist of the Year will be awarded to the one with the most points.

DEADLINES:

April 15th – for work produced in Jan, Feb, March
JULY 15th – for work produced in April, May, June
Oct 15th – for work produced in July, August, Sept
Jan 15th – for work produced in Oct, Nov, Dec

FILES/NAMING

Before you continue, make sure your video is encoded and named correctly. Filenames must be in this format:

Encoding: Video files should be encoded using H.264 (unless you’re entering the documentary category, then just provide link. All links should be YouTube or Vimeo, and must be embeddable.)

Format: H.264
Frame Size: no higher then 1920×1080
Frame Rate: 23.976, 24, 25, 29.97, 30 are acceptable.
Field Order: Progressive and Interlaced are acceptable.
File Size: No higher then 500MB
Audio: DO NOT submit stories with panned stereo audio (example: NAT sound on Left, Narration on Right) Make sure the tracks are mixed.

Naming:

“CATEGORY_NAME OF STORY_PHOTOGRAPHERNAME”

Example: MMD_HOUSE FIRE_ROSSTAYLOR.mp4. Failing to do so may result in a lost or DQ’d entry. Contest chair will hide names before sharing files with judges.

CATEGORIES:

MMS Multimedia Short
A piece about the daily spirit of life/personalities, or news and people in the news. A video/audio slideshow under 5 minutes.

MMD Multimedia Deadline
A piece constructed around news events of the day, must have been exectuted in a 24-hour turnaround window.

MML Multimedia Long
A piece about the daily spirit of life/personalities, or news and people in the news. A video/audio slideshow longer than 5 minutes. If it’s substantial in length (i.e. a documentary that exceeds the file size) a working link is enough.

MMD Multimedia Team
A piece about the daily spirit of life/personalities, or news and people in the news. A video/audio slideshow created by 2 or more people. Could include a multi-page presentation. If this is the case, please provide a URL.
