Captions for each portrait helped elevate all three portraits to the top of the pack, as we were able to engage more with each story. First place sets a scene to tell a story, using both the environment and the light to captivate us. Second place was well-captured and gives a sense of mood within the environment of a place where Cheryl Carr lost her home. Third place is clean and the mirror helps give us a peek into his living conditions. We wish we had a bit more connection with the subject toward what he is dealing with as we read in the caption. Also, a few photographs would have fared better in the General News or Feature category.
