FIRST - This was a nicely shot moment. The expression and the ash on his uniform help tell the story. Well done.
SECOND - We had passed on this image at first - it’s a little soft and the edges could be cleaned up. Upon reading the caption, however, we appreciated the photographer seeing beyond the crime scene to look for the people affected.
THIRD - We did not feel the entries in this category justified awards of all three places.
