The eventual award winners in the Photo Essay category were recognized for their time investments with their subjects. Thought a few of the entries were a little cursory, even though they may have contained some nice images. First: Pretty strong narrative element here, and nice collection of pictures illustrating the subject’s challenges and joys of being a single mother and student. Appreciated the effort and the photographer’s ability to get close and earn the trust of the family. Second: Terrific story idea here, but a couple of images left us a little flat. Definitely could turn this into a broader, longer-lasting effort though. Third: Like the Syrian refugees story, but felt it needed a little more context in both the captions and images. We weren’t quite sure how the photos tied together as part of a larger narrative.
