"Overall a touching a thorough piece that shows a lot of care, thought and commitment from the video journalist. The b-roll and natural/verite moments are wonderful and show us the depth of their lives/stories. The access to the families and the trust built with them was apparent. The interview with the mother is great and really gets to the heart of the narrative. (nitpick: her hat is really covering her face, maybe ask her to take it off?). That said - The narration was somewhat abrupt coming straight in, because the intro interview VO had seemed so personal. Then throughout, we’re hearing personal stories, but the narration kind of steals you away from the story, rather than furthering it. Also, the journalist perhaps could have asked more about WHY these kids are seeing so much violence — we never hear about the racism/systemic issues, but rather, it’s talked about on the periphery, which can be somewhat stereotyping—ie. Black neighborhood=violence. ie. ‘Ran with the wrong crowd’ kinda misses the point." "Clear winner, amazing storytelling/access. Emotion puts it over the top. Lovely work. A story where sports is incidental. Could be anything that these kids/parents use as a support system. Community."
