I appreciate the intention, symbolism, and experimentation behind this portrait, which is why I awarded it first. Technically, the composition and exposure could be improved upon, however I like that the photographer was trying to photograph a heavily photographed issue in a different way, and the caption and intent behind the image also signals to me that they spent a lot of time talking with the family.

Although relatively simple, this image felt technically very strong, which is why I awarded it second place. The lighting is soft enough to not be distracting and overdone, and there is some nice detail coming through in the trees, providing a good sense of place. However, what this image has in technical execution, it lacks a bit in story. When you have the ability to control a scene like you often have with a portrait, intention and relevance with the pose and location are critical to create a more informational image.

I like this image because of the light, framing and expression. The frame is clean, and I think the person’s expression invites curiosity about him. The small detail of the Bible in his hand provides just enough information that the viewer would look to the caption to learn more about him. And to that end, the caption has some good info that adds to the image and shows the photographer took the time to engage with this person. While I do like the expression and framing, I think perhaps it’s slightly too passive, and perhaps an expression that had a little more engagement would be more powerful.
