Judges Comments

Once again, the specter of the protest photos occupied some portion of our time. Once the cuffs come out, that's spot news, and the framing of the first place pick, with the pitiful face of the detained protester juxtaposed to the gear of the police was what won us over. The dead bear on the road is just a brilliantly composed image. The photographer really took the time to get all the elements in play. The people are engaged, even the officer directing traffic feels like an active element in telling the story. The protest photo in third caught our eyes because there is so much going on, and yet it's not a question of distracting, but drawing us in to look for all the movement and interaction. Kind of a "where's waldo" of protest photos.
