Judges Comments

The judges were again rather disappointed in the offerings in this category. The number of entries was remarkably small and the vast majority of the images lacked any real sense that the photographers were putting out the effort to make storytelling images that capture moments and give insight into the news any more than the average snapshot. Nearly all the images were static, taken from very passive standpoints, lacking in emotion or depth. Once again we could not go beyond two places in the awards. First place was the only image that brought most of the key elements together. We may not know why the women in the photo are celebrating, but we can tell they are happy, and we can almost feel, in facial expression and body language as well as the composition, that is the case. The photographer needed to get the moment and got it. Second place was just on the slightly weaker side of the 1st place image. The emotion is good, but the composition lacks.
