Southeast – March 2019 – Photo Story/Essay

Judges Comments

Tough category. Unfortunately, there were only four entries this month and we wish there had been more. First Place: “I Got Legs” Strong story and clear that there was an investment in time following the subject. There was a good selection of photos that told a story. And it was a tight and concise edit. Well done. Second Place: “Recognition Day” This was a fine essay on a long-held tradition, The Gauntlet, at the Citadel. Some strong moments that told a story. We liked the visual variety and we’re sure there was a photo editor that appreciated the vertical frame. Third Place: “Humblebee” A daily assignment turned in to a multiple picture story. This is how we should approach every assignment. It was heavy on the details and would have been better supported by some sense of place, human interaction (if available) and other dimensions that give this story more depth. Why is this story of a baker so unique? We want to see. Some ideas would be to explore the customers. Where is the bakery? Take a step back, turn around and use different lenses.
