Southeast – October 2018 – Photo Story/Essay

Judges Comments

Would be nice to see stories that got more into character over process. 1st - This was an easy choice. The photographer invested a lot of time into showing the work that goes into a marching band. The edit is too long and there’s too many process photos, we would have liked to see more emotion and personality. More of the why over the how, this felt a bit too instructional at times. That all being said, coverage was thorough and well executed. 2nd - This was more of a picture package than a story or essay. As simple as it was, the photographer accomplished what they set out to do, however limited. The remote inside the car was dramatic and fun but we would have liked to see a bit more exploration of drivers/fans/cars to broaden the storytelling and bring the reader into the experience more. 3rd - A tried and true story of small town newspapers. The photographer worked hard and showed the process. This suffered from too many pictures, many technical issues around toning, light and exposure. The story really is more about the girl and her hard work than the process of preparing a cow for auction.
