South – September 2018 – Spot News

Judges Comments

Spot news was a slim category. But, we understand that not every month has hard news. The winners did rise to the level, though. First place: A jarring look at a body being removed from a crime scene. It could have used a tighter crop, but the moment and driving rain made this the most compelling spot news photo of the bunch. Second place: The frame was filled with emotion. It was obviously a difficult situation and the photographer was able to make a compelling photo on deadline. Third place: I hate to say it... but we laughed when we first saw this picture. Dark news humor I guess. Luckily, no injuries were reported. The crop was awkward. Perhaps a wider lens and using your feet to get closer. But otherwise it's a picture with a lot of information.
