First place literally leapt off the screen (pun intended). What a crazy scene. In the dark. Wow. We love this photo. Second place does a great job of bringing home graphics and a compelling face from a scene that was “over” by the time the photo was made. Kudos to the photographer for making a fine photo from a cold scene. Third follows in the same vein. Making a storytelling photo after the “action” was over. (Of note, one entry in this category, from the aftermath of a storm, might have placed had a single been entered, but it suffered from being entered as a triptych, which knocked it out of the top three.)
