Northwest – September 2017 – Photo Story/Essay

Judges Comments

The feature multiple picture category was very weak. We realize that newspapers aren't staffed well enough for photojournalists to be given the time to dig deep in to a project. So with that said, we were hard pressed to find a photo story that had a narrative and wasn't just a collection of pictures. Perhaps the category title is misleading, but we view this category as an opportunity to go beyond the simple snapshot glimpse in to the lives of people and bring the viewer closer to the subject by investing their time and patience.First place fit the description of the contest rules the best. The photographer appeared to have built relationship with the weight lifter and afforded great access. The photos moved a story from a beginning to an end. There were moments and nice frames with interesting composition and light. Second place was the closets submission left from the rest to actually fit this category. And we still felt it belonged in the general news category. But with that said, the package had some strong moments. No third place was awarded.
