National – January 2017 – Portrait/Illustration

Judges Comments

First Place has good layering, information, personality and color and tells us about the story. Second Place is intriguing, also for the layering. It is interesting because of the content and the role this woman played in creating the scene. Third Place shows that a portrait doesn’t have to be someone looking square at the camera. It tells you a lot by looking at someone from behind. The portraits that are successful all had in common that they use light to drive us to and affect our reaction to the subjects.
