A lot of these photos were miscategorized, and would have been a better fit in Feature Single (one photo would have specifically placed in the feature category). A general news picture needs more of a compelling reason as to why it is news worthy. For example, someone clearing an inch of snow out of their driveway is not news, unless it was Arizona getting an inch of snow or snow falling in July. If there is some reason as to why it is newsworthy, say so in the caption. Just because something might be daily assignment doesn’t mean that it is automatically news. Options were limited after weeding out the miscategorized photos and we didn’t feel that anything left aside from first place warranted placing.
First Place: This was the only entry to both fit in the news category and be an interesting and technically well executed photo. We enjoyed the story behind the photo and liked the moment between the former player and the coach.
